Some recipes don’t need fancy instructions or long ingredient lists to be absolutely perfect. Instead, they just need love, simplicity, and a few quality ingredients. For example, Grandmama’s Fruit Salad is one of those recipes. It’s a timeless family favorite that has been passed down for generations, and it’s a dish that never fails to bring comfort and joy whenever it’s served.

This fruit salad is my great-grandmother's recipe, and it couldn’t be simpler or more delicious. In fact, when I asked my uncle for the recipe one day, he chuckled and said, "There’s no recipe—just add fruit, whipping cream, and sugar." And that’s it. Simple, right? However, the magic of this fruit salad lies in the perfect combination of fresh, juicy fruit and the rich, creamy texture of the whipped cream. As a result, it’s sweet, refreshing, and incredibly satisfying.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups grapes: Choose red, green, or a mix for variety and color. The grapes add a nice, juicy pop to the salad.
  • 2 cups apples (peeled and diced): Crisp apples like Fuji or Granny Smith work wonderfully in this salad, adding a bit of crunch and tartness.
  • 2 cups bananas (diced): Bananas bring sweetness and a soft, creamy texture to balance out the other fruit.
  • 2 cups oranges - chopped: Fresh, juicy oranges brighten the salad with a citrusy zing.
  • ½ cup whipping cream: This is what makes the salad creamy and indulgent, adding richness without being overly heavy.
  • 1-2 tablespoons sugar (optional): This is optional depending on your sweetness preference. If the fruit is naturally sweet enough, you can skip the sugar entirely.

How to Make Grandmama’s Fruit Salad:

Grandmama's fruit salad is as easy as it gets—no cooking, no complicated steps—just simple ingredients that come together effortlessly.

Prepare the Fruit: To start, begin by chopping the fruit into bite-sized pieces. Peel and dice the apples, chop the bananas, cut the grapes in halves, and carefully peel and chop the oranges into small sections.

Combine the Fruit: Next, add all of the chopped fruit to a large bowl. Make sure to use a big enough bowl to easily toss and mix everything together.

Add the Whipping Cream: Then, pour the heavy whipping cream over the fruit. The cream will coat the fruit and make it extra smooth and creamy.

Sweeten (Optional): If you prefer a sweeter fruit salad, you can stir in 1-2 tablespoons of sugar. However, the fruit is usually sweet enough on its own, so the sugar is entirely optional. Simply taste and adjust to your liking.

Mix and Serve: Finally, gently stir the cream and sugar (if using) into the fruit until everything is well-coated. Serve right away, or refrigerate until you’re ready to enjoy.

Why Grandmama's Fruit Salad is So Special

What makes Grandmama's fruit salad truly special isn’t just the ingredients—it’s the memories and traditions that come with it. It’s the simplicity of a recipe that’s been passed down for generations, and the fact that every time it’s served, it brings family together. Whether it's a holiday gathering, a family reunion, or a summer cookout, this fruit salad has been a staple at my family gatherings since I was kid!

My great-grandmother always made this salad with love, and now, every time I make it, I feel like I'm carrying on a cherished tradition. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best things in life are the simplest.

Why You’ll Love This Fruit Salad

  • Simplicity: With only a few fresh ingredients, Grandmama's fruit salad is easy to prepare and always turns out delicious. No complex steps or hard-to-find ingredients—just the goodness of fruit and cream.
  • Refreshing and Light: The fruit adds a refreshing, light quality to the salad, while the whipped cream makes it rich and creamy without being overly heavy.
  • Customizable: You can mix and match the fruits based on what's in season or what you have on hand. Try adding strawberries, pineapples, or even kiwi for a fun twist.
