If you’re looking for a light and flavorful dressing that instantly upgrades any salad, then this creamy poppy seed dressing is just what you need. Not only does it come together quickly, but it also delivers the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and savory flavors. As a result, it’s a staple you’ll want to keep stocked in your fridge.

This light and refreshing poppy seed salad dressing is especially perfect for the spring and summer seasons. Since our schedules often get hectic, I love having it ready to go in the fridge for quick meals. It’s slightly tangy, just sweet enough, and packed with vibrant flavor.

Originally, I created this recipe to complement my Grapefruit Salad, but now I use it all the time. For example, it’s amazing on spinach with strawberries, mixed greens with apples, or even drizzled over roasted veggies.

Ingredients for the Creamy Poppy Seed Dressing

Let’s break down what goes into this creamy poppy seed dressing and why each ingredient matters:

White wine vinegar – First, it brings a light tang and brightness that balances the sweet and creamy elements beautifully.
Honey – Next, honey adds natural sweetness to mellow the acidity of the vinegar and round out the flavors.
Minced shallot – Additionally, shallot gives a gentle bite and subtle depth without being overpowering.
Dijon mustard – Not only does it help emulsify the dressing, but it also adds a slight sharpness that cuts through the creaminess.
Poppy seeds – Furthermore, poppy seeds offer a subtle crunch and visual appeal in every drizzle.
Mayonnaise – Then, mayo creates a creamy, smooth base and ties everything together.

Instructions

  1. Step 2: Be sure the honey is dissolved and if not, use a whisk or a small handheld electric whisk. Taste and adjust the sweetness or salt if needed.

  1. Step 3: Store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to one week. Shake before using if it separates.

Substitutions

Although this Creamy Poppy Seed Dressing recipe is fantastic as is, there are a few easy swaps you can make to suit your pantry or preferences.

  • Out of honey? No problem! You can try using maple syrup or white sugar instead. Both will still provide a touch of sweetness.
  • No avocado oil on hand? Don’t worry—olive oil makes a great substitute. It blends in nicely and still gives that rich, smooth texture.

Using a small handheld electric whisk is helpful to get the dressing extra smooth and creamy. Not only does it blend the ingredients quickly, but it also helps emulsify the oil and vinegar beautifully. However, a regular whisk works just fine if that’s what you have on hand.

Creamy Poppy Seed Dressing

Light, creamy, and full of flavor—this poppy seed dressing is the perfect pairing for your grapefruit salad!

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons white wine vinegar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons honey adjust to taste
  • 1 tablespoon finely minced shallot
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • ⅓ cup avocado oil
  • Pinch of salt optional, to taste

Instructions

  • In a mason jar, add the vinegar, honey, minced shallot, Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, poppy seeds, and olive oil tighten the lid and shake until smooth. Be sure the honey is well incorporated (it can settle on the bottom of the jar). Using a small electric handheld whisk works well too!
  • Taste and adjust the sweetness or salt if needed.
  • Store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to one week. Give it a quick shake before using.
